WWE is launching a brand new championship title which can only be defended on X (Twitter).

That's right, after the huge $5 billion Netflix deal earlier this year, the sports entertainment giant and Elon Musk's social media platform have now joined forces on a new concept called WWE Speed, which will feature wrestlers competing in fast paced bouts with a strict three minute time limit.

The bouts will be exclusively broadcast on X, and a tournament to crown the first WWE Speed Champion is set to get underway on April 3, just in time for WrestleMania 40.

No, it's not a match on Mars (although who'd bet against it?), but it is a unique addition to WWE's programming.

In a video hyping up the innovative project, SmackDown commentator Corey Graves promises 'a fresh and dynamic new twist to classic in ring competition, were some of the fastest, toughest WWE Superstars do battle with time itself'.

He explained that, under the new WWE Speed rules, the superstars 'only have three minutes to defeat their opponent'.

Corey added: 'Three intense, adrenaline fueled minutes where strategy, agility and strength collide. This isn't just another match, this is a sprint to the finish line. The prize? The prestigious first ever WWE Speed Championship.

'So brace yourself for a tournament like no other, where every match is a finale, and every second can define a superstar's legacy.'

WWE has been taping matches for Speed in recent weeks, with SmackDown star Pete Dunne working as a producer on two of the bouts, with Tyler Bate taking on Angel Garza and Cedric Alexander battling Odyssey Jones.

Reaction to the new title has been mixed, with plenty of fans excited for a fresh concept away from the regular Raw, SmackDown and NXT weekly shows.

'I love this. Hopefully a bunch of the cruiserweight and Luchadors take part,' suggested @GregoryGambles, as @Cigano300 added: '3 min bangers on X? Curious to see how this all shakes out. #WWESpeed'

'Like this concept cannot wait,' tweeted @fabien_fichaux, while @EinAlman said: 'Fast wrestlers like Ricochet, Axiom and Nathan Frazer could actually cook with that.'

Not everyone is quite so keen, as @HistoryMakerDJS ranted: 'This is one of the worst ideas in pro wrestling history. There should be no such thing as a match between full time talent that goes less than 11-12 minutes.'

And @selenasbriemode complained: 'A Twitter championshipwe've officially lost the plot.'

Others pointed out that that now gives the men of WWE a seventh singles championship to fight for across Raw, SmackDown and NXT, while the women only have three in total.
