Superclub Rivals has received five times its Kickstarter goal, and the Norwegian studio tells GameCentral it's confident it's got the next big tabletop game.

Making a tabletop game that caters to football fans doesn't sound like the easiest bridge to gap, but Norwegian game studio Superclub has set out to do just that while attempting to distribute its upcoming game a football management game called Superclub Rivals around the world.

To do so co-founder and creative director Audun Egenberg, and the rest of the small studio, asked for crowdfunding on Kickstarter this month, and to their surprise they reached their goal of 8,500 in just 13 minutes.

The funding is still ongoing and has now reached five times its initial goal, standing at 45k from 1,100 backers, and the creative director tells GameCentral how it all happened and what's next.

'It [the funding] means a lot. With this game, our goal is mass distribution in stores all over the world,' Egenberg said.

'With the Kickstarter campaign, we want to send a strong signal to the board game industry that football fans truly want a football board game, they've just been waiting for the right game. Superclub, and now Superclub Rivals, is that game.'

Superclub Rivals is the simplified version of their first game, Superclub, and is a two-player football management tabletop game where you select a team, draft a squad, prepare and play matches.

Although it comes with licensed expansions including top clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Barcelona, it hasn't made a name for itself in the mainstream tabletop industry.

That's what the goal is with Superclub Rivals, said Egenberg: 'WhileSuperclubis a fantastic game, the feedback from the board game industry is that it's a little too expensive for true mass market distribution.

'So what we've done with Superclub Rivals is to take the essence of what makes Superclub such an amazing game, along with a host of improvements that we and our community have come up with over the years, and packed it into a smaller, more accessible format.'

Egenberg said the success of the Kickstarter will let them finish the 'final touches of the design and go to print'. Then the plan is to get the Kickstarter version of Superclub Rivals out to their backers in November, but hopes they can surprise them with a release 'much sooner than that'.

The retail version will come out in the fourth quarter of 2024 (between the start of October and the end of December), while they currently look for more distribution partners to launch it in as many corners of the world as possible.

'We want to release it everywhere. The UK is our biggest market by quite some distance. Germany is second and growing fast. Together with Italy, France, Spain, and our native Scandinavia, those will make up key markets to begin with.

'We've signed some distribution deals already, and are actively looking for partners in both Europe and the rest of the world.'

Egenberg reminisced about his younger days, when he'd play FIFA in the barracks during his military service, and having Football Manager LAN parties at university. That's where the idea for Superclub began, and now he wants to facilitate those same memories for football fans, but in a different format.

'I think many fans appreciate the straightforward prospect of a non-digital game where the goal is simply to have fun with the people closest to you.'
