Developer Extremely OK Games has announced its next game will not be released this year, as the studio's director of R&D recovers from surgery.

Earthblade was among our most anticipated indie games of the year, but it will now no longer come out in 2024.

Developer Extremely OK Games, who are known for TowerFall and 2018's Celeste, has shared an update regarding its next title Earthblade. The 'explor-action' game was first shown in 2022 at The Game Awards with a vague 2024 release date.

As outlined in a new blog post from the studio, however, the title will no longer make this release window.

'First we need to face the music: this game ain't coming out in 2024,' the studio's director of R&D, Maddy Thorson, wrote. 'We had hoped to be announcing a firm release date around now, but it just isn't in the cards. We know that this will be disappointing for a lot of you and we're sorry for that. Maybe this was predictable, but still it always sucks when the haters are right.'

Thorson said progress on Earthblade 'is not stagnant' and the team is 'still excited to work on it', but that she had struggled to keep up with her workload due to challenges in her personal life, including her gender transition.

'Transition involves a lot of change, uncertainty and doubt, and it's easy to see how that has bled into Earthblade,' Thorson wrote.

She added: 'I recently returned from an overseas trip where I underwent a major transition-related surgery. I'm still recovering both physically and emotionally, but it's so nice to be back home and at work. This was a huge, destabilising event that loomed over the last year for me.

'Now that it's over, I feel such a deep sense of ease, like my mind was a tangle of knots that I can now begin to slowly unpick. And with each knot untied, more clarity takes its place. It feels like the start of a new era.'

The post also announces the addition of developer Kyle Pulver to the team, who previously worked on Rivals 2, Super Meat Boy Forever, and other titles.

'Kyle quickly approached us with big ideas, which can be scary for everyone involved,' Thorson added. 'But it was clear that he's not here to derail the project. He's identifying our vision and the problems preventing the game from living up to it, and working with us to pinpoint solutions. Plus his fresh eyes have inspired all of us to see things anew.'

Earthblade sees you play as Nvoa, an 'enigmatic child of Fate' who returns to Earth in a Metroidvania-style title which boasts 'seamless exploration, challenging combat, and countless mysteries to pick apart'.

While Earthblade has been delayed, there are still some high-profile indie games set to debut this year, including Hades 2 and No Rest For The Wicked from the studio behind Ori And The Blind Forest.
