Fans of BBC crime drama Death in Paradise have been left reeling at the news that this season of the show will be star Ralph Little's last.

Recent episodes of the show have strongly implied that DI Neville Parker, played by actor Ralph, is planning on leaving the Caribbean island of Sant Marie – seemingly for good.

The actor, 44, was the fourth to star in the hit BBC show after Ben Miller, Kris Marshall and Ardal O'Hanlon.

Having starred in the show for five years, this makes Ralph the longest-running lead in the show's 13-season history.

But with a 14th season confirmed – and a Christmas special on the way – Ralph's exit leaves a void which will need to be filled.

So, who could be the next star of Death in Paradise?

Simon Bird

According to bookmakers Betfred, The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird, 39, is favourite to take over from Ralph, with odds of 4/1.

Simon's casting would certainly fit with the series' previous theme of casting actors primarily known for their work in comedy.

If true, the star, best known for playing Will on The Inbetweeners and Adam on Friday Night Dinner, had better start packing his bags now.

Diane Morgan

Motherland star Diane Morgan, 48, is second favourite to take over so far, with odds of 7/1.

If true, this would make her the show's first female lead. However, her acting chops – having appeared in Ricky Gervais's After Life and the deeply silly Cunk on Earth.

After 13 years with a series of male leads, surely it's time to shake things up a bit? And what a shake-up the unpredictably chaotic Diane Morgan could be.

Mathew Horne

The Gavin and Stacey star, 45, has actually already been on Death in Paradise – having appeared in an early episode during Ben Miller's time on the show.

However, that didn't stop Ralph Little before him – who appeared as a character in season two named Will Teague.

With a similar history in comedy, the former comedy partner of James Corden could be a solid fit for a trip to Sant Marie.

Romesh Ranganathan

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan, 45, may be best known for hosting The Weakest Link and his shows with fellow funnyman Rob Beckett.

However, he does have a varied and successful history in acting – having starred in his own sitcom, Avoidance and appearing in 2021's Cinderella.

Jodie Whittaker

Another name in the running to take the top job is former Doctor Who herself, Jodie Whittaker, 41.

While not known specifically for her comedic roles, her performance as the Doctor showcased a manic energy which BBC bosses may want to harness in replacing Ralph.

And, after a disastrous stint in the Celeb Bake-Off tent and starring in the deeply depressing prison drama Time, the star could probably do with spending some time in the sun.

Josephine Jobert

Another train of thought is that a former star of the show could return to take a more prominent role – with Josephine Jobert, 38, having recently returned as DS Florence Cassell.

While there's an outside chance she could convince Neville to stick around, the show could also pivot to her as its lead.

This would bring a whole new dynamic to the show. And, given it's been around for 13 seasons now, it could certainly do with shaking things up a bit.
