A DRIVER has evaded criticisms of his American-built car by investing in modifications that make it drive more like a Ferrari.
The Chevy Corvette fanatic posted dozens of TikToks punching back at Ferrari purists – American car fans said the car is just a fraction of the price.
The TikToker, Nick Brooks (@nick_brooks_) said people make fun of him for driving the Corvette, writing in on-screen text: "Bro drives a knock-off Ferrari."
Brooks, who posts consistently about old and new Corvettes on his page, said he has driven four new versions of the car since 2020.
He is also currently modifying two third-generation Corvettes at the same time.
Corvettes, an American-made classic car, combine speed figures that are comparable to more expensive Italian-made Ferraris.
A Ferrari Roma – the cheapest sportscar in the Italian brand's lineup – sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds.
The Corvette accelerates to 60 mph from standing in 2.9 seconds.
Ferrari supercars are sold between $240,000 to $2 million.
Corvette's fetch a base price of $64,500.
Dozens of TikTok commenters agreed that the car was a cheaper version of the Italian sportscar.
"That's the fastest car I've ever [driven]," one TikToker said.
"[I] drove one on the track they use to test 'vettes in Kentucky."
However, others believe the Ferrari has a better design.
"Still not as refined or as pretty as a Ferrari," the commenter said about the Corvette.
CORVETTE CHANGE?
The Corvette, which debuted in 1956, initially made it into American vehicle lore as a front-engine muscle racer.
However, the current eighth-generation model ditched the front-loaded engine to place the propulsion system in the middle of the car.
The Corvette's rear mid-engine configuration was the first GM car with that engine placement since the 1980s.
Chevy also released plans to partially electrify its racer in 2023.
The car will have a new hybrid variant that makes the racer even faster.
The Corvette E-Ray – combining a V8 gas engine with a hybrid battery – will accelerate to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds.
"[E-Ray] is a testament to innovation that [Corvette] has represented throughout its 70-year legacy and certainly represents the future of what this car is capable to deliver moving forward," Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet, said to CNBC.
