A MECHANIC has compiled data from his shop to tell customers the five cheapest car brands to maintain – the list has some surprising findings.
In a TikTok, the mechanic revealed which car brands have cost the least to repair in his shop in the past two years.
"This is going to surprise a lot of people," a Georgia-based mechanic (@royaltyautoservice) said in the TikTok.
"These are definitely out of order from where I thought they would be."
The shop crunched data from the past two years of repairs to find which car brands had the lowest fixing costs per car.
The mechanics said the rudimentary data should not be "used for your thesis" because it doesn't have a large enough sample size of vehicles.
"This is just coming from our shop. Two years worth of information – do with it what you want," the mechanic said.
Here is the compiled list of the five cheapest brands in that mechanic shop:

CONSUMER REPORTS REFUTES
However, a wide-ranging study shows different reliability results than the mechanics'.
Consumer Reports recently revealed its list of consumer-rated vehicle brands.
The publication reviewed data from drivers of 330,000 vehicles from model years 2000 through 2023.
The data sets are based on how many complaints consumers self-report to the publication.
But, the larger, more expansive data set revealed a different story for reported car quality.
Lexus took home the Consumer Reports highest quality rating for a brand, followed by Toyota, Mini, Acura, and Honda.
Meanwhile, consumers reported the most issues in their Jeep, Volkswagen, Rivian, Mercedes-Benz, and Chrysler vehicles.
EV DEPENDABILITY?
The tests also revealed that drivers in electric vehicles (EVs) were 80% more likely to report quality issues in their new vehicles.
However, electric vehicles have several advantages that may slow down consumer issues.
EV startups – like Rivian, Tesla, Polestar, and Fisker – have spent top-dollar to shore up quality issues in their cars.
Also, all four vehicle companies are capable of over-the-air updates to infotainment systems and driving capacity.
The tech updates allow the companies to retroactively improve their cars from the driver's home, while standard gas-powered vehicles can only be enhanced at a professional garage.
Experts are saying EV skepticism will shrink as the companies smooth out their car rollouts.
"This story is really one of growing pains," Jake Fisher, Consumer Report's senior director of auto testing told Fortune.
"It's a story of just working out the bugs and the kinks of new technology."
