AN ANGLER was surprised after reeling in a rare Atlantic salmon whereas fishing in London — one of the first in 200 years.

The catch sparks hope that the species, endangered within the UK, could also be returning to the river.

It was all however wiped out by pollution from factories within the 1700s.

Nationwide, its inhabitants has fallen by as much as 50 per cent since 2006 — and 23 per cent globally.

Development employee Hector caught it near Mitcham, South West London, and stated: "I used to be gobsmacked.

"It was very robust and it jumped 3 times and did some somersaults."

He stated the salmon was "skinny and empty", suggesting it'd been additional upstream to lay eggs.

Alison Debney, of the Zoological Society of London, advised The Solar: "There has been a programme of making an attempt to get salmon back in the Thames, led by the Setting Agency.

"That they had virtually misplaced hope.

"If salmon are coming in and involved in spawning, then it's excellent.

"It provides hope going forward."

& Stuart Singleton-White, from the Angling Trust, stated the catch was "very thrilling".

But he urged caution, including: "This is probably a stray fish which lost its means."

Cuban-born Hector, of Dagenham, East London, launched the fish again into the Wandle and stated: "I hope we'll see extra."
