Recently I hosted afternoon tea for six new friends, four of us women in our late-50s, and two chaps in their mid-60s. We had initially met at the local gym and I was delighted as everyone got to know each other over scones and sandwiches. But then this peculiar feeling hit me; it was as if I was watching myself from the other side of the room. I saw a 57-year-old woman, with a new circle of friends, living her new life, and panic gripped me.
