IT'S A TALE of two houses, if you will: the villa Noailles in the south of France, and luxury French fashion Maison Chanel. The pair share a long and storied history a century long, and in the new spring-summer '24 ready-to-wear campaign from Chanel, starring actor Riley Keough and model Rianne Van Rompaey, that relationship continues through the ever-brilliant lens of Inez & Vinoodh.
The villa Noailles, situated in Hyres on the Cte d'Azur, was designed in 1923 for Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles, both avid patrons of the arts, and Marie-Laure herself an artist. Together, they collected bold and avant-garde pieces from all disciplines, and fashion was no exception. Marie-Laure frequently donned haute couture creations by Gabrielle Chanel, with whom she became close personal friends alongside an eclectic group of other artists: Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Man Ray and more.
Now, over one hundred years since the start of the villa Noailles' construction, Chanel creative director Virginie Viard returns to solidify and strengthen the ties between the esteemed houses in a celebration of family, friendship and creativity-and Chanel's latest seasonal collection.
Garbed in SS24, long-term Chanel model Rianna van Rompaey appears alongside actor, director and producer Riley Keough, who is Chanel's newest ambassador.
"I have loved Chanel since I was a little girl," Keough says. "To now represent the House is an honour. It is the most elegant and inspiring House. To me, the Chanel woman represents so many things-sophistication, elegance, artistry, bold integrity."
Those terms are ones with which one could also describe the villa Noialles, whose unique beauty comes alive as photographers Inez & Vinoodh play on light and colour, geometry and asymmetry, repose and vigour-the very same factors brought to life in the spring-summer '24 collection. These shared qualities are no coincidence: Viard was inspired by the villa in her designing of it, paying homage to its modernist lines and famous cubist checkered garden through graphic checks and bold stripes; and to its elegant flowering gardens through rich prints and embroidery.
I am so inspired by Virginie and the artistic community around Chanel, Keough notes. The villa Noailles was an avant garde meeting place for artists to come and spend time amongst one another, liberated from constraint and emancipated from structure. This is the feeling that I believe also exists within Chanel. So, it felt very fitting that this place inspired the collection.
It's incredible to be in a space so imbedded in the history of modern art," adds Van Rompaey. "You can feel that it's built to inspire, and to be able to create something new in this space where so many artists came before, is really special."
