NEED TO KNOW

  • The DTF St. Louis finale reveals who is behind the death of David Harbour's lead character Floyd after a long investigation

  • Creator Steven Conrad and stars Joy Sunday and Richard Jenkins, who play detectives in the series, open up to PEOPLE about the complex ending

  • Conrad also shares the inspiration behind the miniseries, which sees Floyd struggle with intimacy and relationships, leaving him in "emotional desperation"

The season finale ofDTF St. Louisproves that nothing is truly what it seems.

After weeks of investigating the death ofDavid Harbour’s Floyd, the final episode of the HBO miniseries saw detectives Jodie Plumb (Joy Sunday) and Donoghue Homer (Richard Jenkins) realize that the case might have been much simpler than they imagined.

“You'll probably have to go back to the beginning to really understand the ending, honestly,” Sunday tells PEOPLE.

“Somebody said, ‘When you get a script like that, don't you want to jump to the end and find out what happens?’" Jenkins adds. “I said, ‘If in this script you jump to the end, you still won't know what happened unless you know the whole script beforehand.’”

A central theme of the season was Floyd’s struggling sex life with his wife, Carol (Linda Cardellini), due in part to his Peyronie’s disease, a condition where the penis develops a curvature that causes erectile dysfunction. It was later revealed that Carol was having an affair with Floyd’s best friend, Clark Forrest (Jason Bateman), which led Clark to become the prime suspect in the case.

While the toxicology report showed that Floyd died from an apparent poisoning, detectives suspected Clark was responsible, but that theory began to fall apart when they discovered that Floyd not only knew about the affair, but was accepting of it.

“The writing is just sublime,” Jenkins notes. “I hadn't read anything like that in a long time, so it was an easy yes for me. And it never disappointed in the playing of it, it never disappointed. You almost felt you weren't worthy of it at times. It was that good.”

Jason Bateman, Linda Cardellini and David Harbour in 'DTF St. Louis'Credit: HBO

In the finale, viewers learned that Clark, who had given Floyd — per his request — his prescription for a stimulant drug called Amphezyne in an effort to improve his sex life, was with Floyd in the poolhouse the night of his death. After Floyd admitted that he had mixed some of the drug into his canned drink — which proved to be what killed him — the two stripped down to their underwear and danced together.

However, when Floyd began to show his romantic interest, Clark confessed that he didn’t share those same feelings.

“I love a show where you can go, ‘Okay, things are going to go poorly for these people who expect things to go well,’” the show’s creator Steven Conrad tells PEOPLE of the concept behind the series.

Meanwhile, Carol’s son, Richard (Arlan Ruf), was watching from the window after finding out that his stepfather was on the dating site called DTF St. Louis, meant for married people seeking outside hookups.

“When I started to conceive this idea, it was 2018, 2019,” Conrad reveals. “These hookup apps were probably at their height of popularity and their promise of, ‘Well, you have a commitment, you'll meet someone else with a commitment, and no one will ever know. You'll share a secret night and then you'll both go home to your partners and everything will go back to normal.’ That idea that there could be excitement without consequences.”

David Harbour and Arlan Ruf in 'DTF St. Louis'Credit: Tina Rowden/HBO

When Clark left, Richard confronted Floyd, who he later watched make a “rock and roll” hand gesture before chugging the rest of his drink. Little did Richard know, the symbol Floyd made actually meant “I love you” in American Sign Language.

The revelation that Floyd’s demise was ultimately at his own hands was a reflection of what Conrad says happens when people “feel emotional desperation and then make bad decisions.”

He adds that Harbour portrayed “a person who was susceptible to this bad idea five years ago, but wouldn't have done it 30 pounds ago, wouldn't have done it one friendship earlier, wouldn't have done it but in a phase of life now where he seems to need some volt of electricity to resuscitate him.”

DTF St. Louisis available to stream on HBO Max.

Famed ESPN college basketball voice Dick Vitale facing another battle with cancer

Famed ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale isfacing another battle with cancer.

Associated Press

Vitale said Monday that biopsy results had confirmed a diagnosis of melanoma in his lung and liver cavity, which will have him starting immunotherapy. It marks his fifth battle with cancer, which sidelined him from the airwaves for two years before his return shortly before March Madness in 2025.

“I've beaten melanoma,” the 86-year-old Vitale saidin a statement released by ESPN. “I've beaten lymphoma. I've beaten vocal-cord cancer. I've beaten lymph-node cancer. I'm 4 for 4 and I'm fully confident I'm going to make it 5 for 5."

Separate from his ESPN statement, Vitaleposted on social media Mondaythat he had gone through 10 days of testing that included scans, MRIs, bloodwork and a biopsy.

"I obviously did not get the report today that I was hoping for when my oncologist called,” Vitale said, noting he planned on “winning the battle” and adding: “Now at least I know what I face.”

Vitale has made himself a fixture in college basketball, earning the affectionate nickname “Dickie V” with his voice and exuberant style offering a soundtrack to some of the biggest moments in the sport's history. He's inching closer to five decades with ESPN going back to its 1979 launch, armed with a contract through the 2027-28 season as well asthe creation of a basketball event named in his honorthis past season.

And every step of the way he's quick to tell anyone and everyone how “lucky” he feels to still be working after years of fighting cancer.

That started in 2021 with melanoma, followed by treatments for lymphoma. There were also chemotherapy treatments, radiation for vocal-cord cancer and surgery by summer 2024 to remove cancerous lymph nodes from his neck, while he was unable to speak for a time after the vocal-cord surgery, leaving him having to scribble on eraser-board messages to communicate.

Still, Vitale said in his ESPN statement that he feels “fantastic." And he quickly turned the focus of his statement to his long-running efforts to raise money for pediatric cancer research, notably withnext month’s annual gala in his namethat has raised more than $105 million in its two-decade history.

“At 86 years young, I've lived a hell of a life, and I'm more motivated than ever to raise money for kids battling cancer,” Vitale said, adding that he hopes to raise $12 million with the 21st “Dick Vitale Gala” set for May 1 in Sarasota, Florida.

Pakistan pushing for Round 2 of

A senior Pakistani government official confirmed to CBS News that Islamabad has intensified diplomatic efforts to bring Tehran and Washington back to the negotiating table over theIran war.

CBS News

Despite the lack of a breakthrough in the historic face-to-face round oftalks over the weekend, Pakistani authorities said they remain cautiously optimistic about the prospects for continued engagement between both sides.

Notably, there appears to be an element of rebranding underway, with officials now increasingly referring to the "Islamabad Talks" as the "Islamabad Process," a shift that suggests an effort to frame the engagement as an ongoing diplomatic track rather than a one-off meeting.

The top-level source also said Monday thatPakistanis in active contact with both Washington and Tehran, urging them to resume dialogue at the earliest opportunity. The primary objective is to reach a workable understanding before thecurrent ceasefire— set to expire around April 22 — ends in order to prevent a return to all-out-war. Efforts are now underway to facilitate a second round of talks within this narrow window.

According to the source, these diplomatic initiatives are being pursued under the direct instructions of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. Both played a key role in bringing the two sides together, were present at varying times throughout the 21 hours of inconclusive talks, and have been working intensely to move the process forward.

CBS News has been told Pakistan is now waiting for responses from both the U.S. and Iran.On Monday, Qatar's foreign minister told his Iranian counterpart that Iran and the U.S. should engage positively with mediation efforts, warning that maritime routes must not be used as "bargaining tools."Qatari Foreign Minister and Premier Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani "also emphasised the need to open maritime routes, guarantee freedom of navigation, and refrain from using them as a tool for pressure or bargaining," according to the foreign ministry'sXaccount.

A new global player?

Pakistan, a nuclear power with a population of 250 million, has been trying to rebrand itself to attract investment and stabilize its crippled economy.

Successfully mediating such peace talks would be a diplomatic coup and go some way toward helping the nation's desire to be seen as a global player.

If the current ceasefire holds, Pakistan may have some wiggle room as it tries to bring the Americans and Iranians back around the table.

But with U.S. threats to blockade theStrait of Hormuz, and Iranian promises to retaliate, officials might be counting the time they have at their disposal in hours, rather than days.

LFO's Brad Fischetti Shares Heartbreak Over the Tragic Early Deaths of All Three Of His Bandmates: 'How Could This Happen?'

NEED TO KNOW

  • When Gillis left the group, he was replaced by Harold 'Devin' Lima, who became one of Fischetti's best friends

  • Fischetti opens up about the death of all three of his bandmates before they reached the age of 50

Brad Fischetti has experienced tremendous loss in his time in a boy band.

In ID'sBoy Band Confidential,Fischetti speaks candidly about being the last surviving member of LFO. The trio "started as a rap group," and evolved as the original lineup — Fischetti, Rich Cronin and Brian "Brizz" Gillis — got their start.

In 1998, Gillis left the group and was replaced by Harold 'Devin' Lima. The new trio "wrote a lot of our songs ourselves," which was uncommon for the landscape at the time.

"'Summer Girls,' it's an anthem. It's this classic... the video could be shot today, you know? We did the ocean, the beach scene. At the end, Devin and I had our arms around each other and walked into the ocean. It's really timeless."

Not only was "Summer Girls" a hit, but their second single, "Girl on TV," also charted, inspired by the fact that Cronin "was infatuated with Jennifer Love Hewitt," who they got to appear in the music video.

When it came to their third single, however, the band started seeing their momentum slow down. "It got added to a bunch of radio stations, but it didn't really hit. When the sales didn't hit, I think the label was like, 'Well, that's that. Time to move on.' "

The group disbanded and in 2005, Fischetti got a call from Cronin's brother with heartbreaking news.

"He's like, 'Hey Brad, I got some bad news. Rich has leukemia.' I had heard that Rich was having trouble with his legs. So I texted him like, 'Hey man, I heard you were having some trouble walking. I figure there's two ways to get you out of bed — one is a beautiful blonde, or a tour.' I said, 'What do you think? You want to tour again?'"

Fischetti never got a response. "A few weeks later, I found out from a fan, actually, that he had died."

The loss was hard for Fischetti, but he still had a close relationship with Lima, who was living with him at the time.

"We just started making music together. So we did a tour, it's amazing," Fischetti recalls. "We were going to do two more legs, but I remember one day, I was at my office and Alan, who played acoustic guitar for us, he came in and goes, 'Can you talk? Devin's in the hospital.' "

He continued, "Devin was never sick. I run to the hospital and he's not in his bed. He's sitting on a chair, meditating. But then, on the desk, they hav a list of doctors and one of the doctors listed was an oncologist. And I was like, 'Oh my God.' "

Fischetti tearfully explained that Lima had a "very rare cancer, called primary adrenal cancer," adding, "Your adrenal gland's like a little acorn-sized organ on top of your kidney, and it just engulfed his entire kidney."

The cancer spread throughout Lima's body and, "For the next year, nothing worked."

"I used to yell at God, like, 'Please don't take him. Please.' He passed away and he was not only my bandmate, but my best friend."

Fischetti took himself to a doctor, looking into his own health. When he got good news for himself, he thought it was the end of a painful saga, but that didn't prove to be the case. In 2023, Fischetti received a call from his manager with more difficult news.

"He goes, 'I don't think you're ready for this.' Then he goes, 'Brian's dead.' "

The news was devastating for Fischetti, who recalls, "I cried like the way I died when Devin died... How could this happen? How is this possible, that these three guys under 50 are all dead?"

"If you look from the outside, people say, 'Oh, LFO is cursed.' I don't really believe in that kind of stuff. But who knows? Maybe by the time this airs, I'm gone," he said.

Today, Fischetti keeps the band's legacy going, performing LFO's biggest hits with members of O-Town.
