CHRISTIAN DIOR FASHIONED the original Rouge Dior lip colour in 1953. Post-war optimism had breathed new life into both fashion and beauty. Sophisticated makeup defined the decade, with radiant skin, winged lids, defined brows and statement lipstick the hallmarks of this confident new look. Seventy years on, '50s-inspired glamour is back, as the star of Netflix's The New Look, Maisie Williams, shows to dramatic effect in our cover shoot. In the historical drama series, Williams plays Catherine Dior, heroic sister of Christian and namesake of his iconic scent, Miss Dior.

London-based makeup artist Bari Khalique, who created Williams' graphic look on the BAZAAR set, explains the key to making vintage-inspired beauty feel current: If you look at images of that time, bold eyeliner and lips were worn together with matte skin, [which was] usually photographed in black and white, Khalique says. To create that newness, I've kept the skin looking fresh and minimal and amped up the eyes and lips for the drama. This high-impact look incorporates several modern accents that are both flattering to wear and surprisingly straightforward to recreate.

SKIN IS IN

A satiny, barely-there base is a trending look for the new season, as heavy contouring and highly glazed faces finally make way for more natural radiance. It's a finish that will modernise your makeup while creating a contemporary canvas for colour, as shown in our shoot. I used the Dior Forever Natural Nude Foundation and Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer, says Khalique of Willams' enhanced complexion. The longwearing yet lightweight foundation formula is designed to deliver a naturally luminous result. Enriched with skincare ingredients, its emulsion-esque texture is fresh and hydrating, which helped create the skin-centric look Khalique wanted to achieve.

And while the right product is paramount for perfecting that natural-looking finish, a confident application technique is just as important, Khalique advises. I use a combination of brushes and fingers to blend the product into the skin, he says. Use very little foundation and then focus more on [adding] concealer where you need it. The artist finished Maisie's look by topping these creamy textures with a super-light application of powder-just across areas prone to shine.

I wanted the lips to DEMAND ATTENTION but not OVERPOWER the look like your typical PILLAR-BOX RED [can]

NO-RULES EYES

Graphic black liner is a perennial beauty classic for good reason. It can enhance and elongate the eye and, placed well, will subtly lift your look. Khalique wanted to infuse the same sexiness into the makeup inherent in Dior's SS24 fashion collection that Williams wears in our cover shoot. I'm always trying to create something new, and this was a moment of spontaneity on set, he says of his contemporary take on the timeless winged lid. A statement black line was carefully sketched along the lower lash line, mirroring the classic shape on the upper lid and adding new edge to the vintage signature. This double wing was further accentuated with a full, brushed-up brow, adding extra drama and bringing the look bang up to date. Emulate the winged shape with Diorshow On Stage Liner in 090 Black, $61-the flexible felt tip makes it simple to achieve that precise finish while easily adjusting the thickness of the line as you work. I say do what feels right in the moment and have fun playing with makeup-no rules, Khalique concludes.

LIVED-IN LIPS

A prevailing '50s beauty signature, 'grown-up' lipstick has made an elegant return this season. Myriad new shades and fresh finishes allow for finding an option that truly flatters, rather than valiantly trying to make a trend work for you. To create Williams' bold lip look, Khalique selected a punchy tone that enhanced her complexion from the recently relaunched Rouge Dior range, which incorporates an incredible 70 shades and two different textures-a radiant satin and a velvety matte. I wanted the lips to demand attention but not overpower the look like your typical pillar-box red [can], he explains of his choice. The all-new colour, 777 Fahrenheit, is one of the star shades of the lipstick collection, a vibrant and universal brick-red.

Khalique says the most modern way to apply your lip colour is little by little, to achieve a sexy, lived-in look. I use the product directly with my fingers, pressing it on to the lips [and] building it up in layers this way you get that soft edge around the mouth, he says. I then blot the lipstick with a tissue and reapply directly from the bullet [just] in the centre of the mouth, and then blot again to take off any excess. These extra steps will achieve that blurred, 'I'm-not-trying' finish that can totally transform a traditional bright lip.

THE FINISHING TOUCH

Just as '50s glamour is having a renaissance, so, too, is vintage-inspired solid perfume. Miss Dior, the time-honoured scent first created by Christian Dior in 1947 and named for his sister Catherine, has received a timely rework. The iconic fragrance has been reimagined in solid form, housed in an elegant, transportable case that will take pride of place in your handbag. Miss Dior Mini Miss Eau de Parfum, $120, is a nod to the miniature replicas of dresses, handbags and shoes created by Monsieur Dior in order to easily present his Haute Couture collection across the world. Ideal for travel and touch-ups, the refillable case comes stamped in a houndstooth jacquard design-a signature of the house. The cutting-edge formula encapsulates a high concentration of fragrance without alcohol, so it feels smooth and comfortable on the skin. And it's fun to apply-like a swipe of your favourite lipstick, the scented formula glides on wherever you prefer to wear your fragrance. Think of it as the ideal accompaniment to a modern-vintage makeup look.
