GUMBOOTS: IF THEY'RE good enough for Queen Elizabeth II and Kate Moss, they're good enough for us. Also known as rainboots or wellingtons, the wet-weather boots stomped onto the scene in a rather utilitarian way in the early 1800s, when Arthur Wellesley-the first Duke of Wellington-wore calf-high "Hessian" boots into battle.

He took the boot to a cobbler to adjust the design-making it better suited both to battle and to evening occasions (get you a guy who can do both, right?)-and by doing so, created the earliest iteration of the wellington. After rubber was invented in the 1850s, a rubberised version was created by an American industrialist in France, and the weatherproof design took off.

Rubber wellies became the shoe of choice among farmers and soldiers alike, keeping their feet comfortable and dry in unsavoury weather conditions, with a well-known brand called Hunter becoming the main producer of the style. But it wasn't just labourers and armies wearing gumboots: The British royal family famously became fans too, with Hunter earning Royal Warrants from both Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth II in 1976 and 1986 respectively. Even Princess Diana was a well-documented fan of the practical style, and being the trendsetter she was, gradually the perception of the wellie as a merely ergonomic piece began to shift.

But it wasn't until the early 2000s that the gumboot would become a true style icon, and that change can surely best be attributed to none other than British model Kate Moss, who was spotted wearing them at the famously muddy music festival Glastonbury in 2005, immediately going on the moodboard of every festival-going girl in the world.

Now, it's no wonder that they're a staple in any wardrobe-no longer just built for function, but also designed for style. Below, we round up the very best (and most stylish) women's gumboots and rain boots, with options to suit every need.

What's the difference between gumboots and rain boots?

Trick question: gumboots and rain boots are the exact same thing. They're also known as wellingtons or wellies, galoshes, mucking boots, and more. The list goes on and on, varying from region to region, but they all do the same thing: Keeping your feet warm and protected from wet weather and muddy conditions.

Should rain boots be tight or loose?

When shopping for rain boots or gumboots, it's best to size up. That way you can pair them with a thick, comfy pair of socks to ensure a snug yet comfortable fit in the rubber material.

How should I clean my gumboots?

Gumboots are designed to get messy, but that doesn't mean they have to stay that way. Merry People recommend wiping off any wet grime from the outside before it dries to make things easier-though if it has dried on, you can use a medium bristled brush or even an old toothbrush to dislodge it without scuffing. If your boots are very dirty, you can clean them with a solution made from a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid detergent mixed into two cups of warm water. Use a soft microfibre cloth to gently buff the solution over the dirty areas, and then use a clean cloth dipped in warm water to give them a final wipe down for a shiny finish.
