"In February this year, I underwent extensive back surgery. Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me," she said at the time.

"Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future – whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation," she continued. "I have decided that now is the right time."

Following the abdication, she continued to attend public events but was sidelined multiple times last year by hospitalizations after she once fell, and later contracted a cold.

Taylor Swift had a perfect Jerome Bettis description, per Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift may not have been a football expert before starting to date Travis Kelce, but she's becoming one now. The 14-time Grammy winner and 3-time Super Bowl champ started dating in the summer of 2023 before getting engaged in August 2025. Swift has been a mainstay at Kansas City Chiefs home games, turning into the type of fan that yells at big plays andhas opinions on the team's draft picks. Now she's learning about NFL legends like former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis.

USA TODAY

Kelce relayed a story on the most recent episode of theNew Heightspodcast about running into Bettis at dinner in Florida. "I was like telling Tay about him like, 'That dude was a [expletive] beast.'" Kelce told his brother Jason, who agreed vociferously with the description. "He was [expletive] running dudes over."

Travis then said he showed his fiancée old highlights of Bettis'. "She was like, 'Why does he look like an offensive lineman running with the football?'"

"Because he was THE BUS," Kelce finished saying. Nailed it in one, Taylor.

Jon Stewart skewers CBS in Stephen Colbert reunion on 'The Late Show'

USA TODAY

The "Daily Show" host sat down with his longtime friend and collaborator on May 19 during the third-to-last episode of "The Late Show," whichwas canceled by CBSin July.

Stewart said he was there to "celebrate my friend" and the "joy" his show brought "to so many people," and he applauded the host for maintaining "such grace through this process."

He also mocked CBS for ending "The Late Show" and alluded to recent changes at the network's news division, where several journalists havedeparted roles at "CBS Evening News"and "60 Minutes" following Bari Weiss' hiring as editor-in-chief.

Jon Stewart appears on

"I just think it's so smart what CBS is doing," he said sarcastically. "I just think it's such a good move, to take this show off the air, and then to also ruin your evening news, and then reduce '60 Minutes' to, like, six good ones. Here's what I believe they're doing: I think they're tanking for a draft pick."

Later, Stewart got in another dig at CBS when he mentioned his 92-year-old mother. "In five more years, she'll be CBS' target demographic," he joked.

A farewell to 'Late Show'sStephen Colbert, TV's gallant comic avenger

With just two days until the final "Late Show," Stewart spoke with Colbert about his own experience of being fired, joking that "it's the best!" In 1995, Stewart's "The Jon Stewart Show" was canceled, and he also voluntarily stepped away from "The Daily Show" in 2015 before returning in 2024.

The comedian relayed the "profound" advice he received fromDavid Lettermanafter his show was canceled: "Don't confuse cancellation with failure," though Stewart joked the former "Late Show" host also told him that "in this case, it is also a failure."

Stewart hosts the Monday episodes of "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central, which has the same parent company, Paramount Skydance, as CBS. "You now are the only person in the corporation left in late night," Colbert told Stewart. "Good luck!" Stewart found this "chilling" but quipped that his only "saving grace" is that "I don't think Trump has cable."

Paramount said in July that canceling "The Late Show" was "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night." But critics alleged the move was intended to appease the Trump administration amid a merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media, which required Trump administration approval.

The Writers' Guild of Americasaid last year it had"significant concerns that 'The Late Show's' cancelation is a bribe, sacrificing free speech to curry favor with the Trump Administration as the company looks for merger approval." The merger was completed in August.

After praising Colbert as a "tremendous human, and one of my favorite people," Stewart presented Colbert with a gift: a pair of luxurious reclining chairs, to show him "the life you can lead, and the life that I am leading, now that I am not really in show business."

Stephen Colbertsays CBS might have 'saved my life' with cancellation

Colbert rose to prominence working with Stewart as a correspondent on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," which led Colbert to get his own spinoff, "The Colbert Report," in 2005. Stewart was a cocreator of "The Colbert Report," which for years aired directly after "The Daily Show" until Colbert moved to "The Late Show" in 2015.

Stewart has appeared on "The Late Show" many times, including after he left "The Daily Show" in 2015. At one point, he and Colbert had a running joke that Stewart lived under Colbert's desk, so he would pop up whenever he had thoughts to share on the news. Stewart is also a producer on "The Late Show."

Colbert now has just two episodes of "The Late Show" remaining. On May 20, Bruce Springsteen will stop by for a performance, and Colbert will take his own "Colbert Questionert," a series of lighthearted questions, "featuring special guests." The series finale of "The Late Show" is scheduled for May 21, though no guests for the final show have been announced.

Amber Portwood’s Domestic Violence Investigation was Kicked Off After “16 & Pregnant” Viewers Reported Her Abuse of Then-Boyfriend Gary Shirley

Amber Portwood's time on reality seriesTeen Momincluded troubling incidents of domestic violence.

In ID'sHollywood Demons: Surviving 16 & Pregnant, Portwood's time on the show is discussed, including early incidents of domestic abuse that were caught on camera while filmingTeen Mom.

In one incident, Amber choked and punched then-boyfriend Gary Shirley during an argument where she felt he disrespected her father, who was present, as well as the couple's infant daughter, Leah.

A later incident shows Amber and Gary arguing when Amber begins to hit him and even kicks him in the back as he's carrying a television down a flight of stairs. The moment wasn't just disturbing for the crew and those who packaged the show, but viewers as well.

From a production standpoint, Dr. Drew Pinsky shares, "These shows were designed to really bring forward the struggles of pregnancy, relationships, family and, of course, raising a baby. But there was certainly tons of concern of, 'What do we do with this?' Tons of it."

Dr. Drew stresses that there were attempts to get Amber help. However, he notes, "An 18-year-old with a child isn't necessarily interested in psychotherapy."

Andrew Hanna, Chief Deputy Prosecutor for Madison County, Indiana, explains that viewers contacted different law enforcement branches. "We started to receive phone calls to the prosecutor's office, to the Anderson Police Department, the Department of Child Services, beginning the very next day [after the episode aired]," Hanna shared.

Police were given access to the raw footage from filming, at which point investigators determined there were three separate incidents of domestic violence: "Investigators watched the footage and determined there were three separate incidents of domestic violence.

"The first incident contained several instances of felony domestic battery, which rose to that standard "because of the presence of the child," Hanna explained.

The second incident was what prompted fans to phone in their concerns. A third incident had gone unaired. Documents are shown on screen indicating that Portwood allegedly "punched and kicked" Shirley in the unaired instance.

“While the criminal investigation was underway, we addressed the domestic violence on the reunion show," Dr. Drew said. "There was a feeling that we didn't want participation in this show to cause her to go to prison, cause her to go to jail or cause her... she had enough going on where the consequences would be potentially profound. On the other hand, if this [behavior] were to continue, that has to happen.”

When police spoke with Portwood and Shirley, "Amber was defiant in terms of downplaying these incidents. She said, to a large degree, she didn't remember these instances because she had blacked out, but if they were on video, then she admitted that they must have occurred.”

Dr. Drew explained, "She said she blacked out, which could be true. That sort of experience of rage happens to dissociative people and it turns out, Amber is highly dissociative.”

Hanna noted, “She stated repeatedly that these were not in any way staged or provoked by the television show.”

Amber was sentenced to two years, which was suspended to formal probation. MTV also put in measures so that Amber had to have a security guard present whenever she and Gary were together or whenever Amber was in Leah's presence for a period of time.

Amber later violated her probation by abusing opiates and getting arrested for possession of a controlled substance. "In the courtroom she said, ‘Judge, you have to put me in jail because I'm going to kill myself if left to my own devices,' and she was right.”

Amber goes to prison for two years and gets invited back on the show afterward. Again, Dr. Drew explains: “You're doing a documentary and not wanting to interfere with somebody's life."

"But I mean, that's the question on every single difficult situation we're airing. Are we giving it sunshine and bringing it to light and showing people what this really looks like and understanding it or avoiding it? Or is it part of an entertaining story? Or both?"

Why Hayden Panettiere was 'deeply uncomfortable' with dynamic with Connie Britton on “Nashville” set

Hayden Panettiere explores the "deeply uncomfortable" dynamic between her and Nashville costar Connie Britton in her new book, This Is Me: A Reckoning.

Entertainment Weekly Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere on 'Nashville'Credit: Chris Hollo/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty

Key Points

  • "This should have been her time to shine, and while it was in many respects, I was terrified of making Connie worry that I — not my character — was trying to compete with her," Panettiere recalls.

  • This Is Me: A Reckoning is now available to purchase wherever books are sold.

Fans enjoyed the contentious rivalry betweenHayden Panettiere's Juliette Barnes andConnie Britton's Rayna James on the musical melodramaNashville, but it was a dynamic that Panettiere worried would bleed into real life.

Reflecting on her timestarring opposite Britton on the drama—which aired six seasons on ABC and then CMT, from 2012-2018 — in her recently released memoir,This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere recalls how a shift in star power led to her feeling "uncomfortable" with the fictional tension between the show's lead characters.

"My character wasn't intended to be the show's star — not even close," Panettiere writes. "That honor went to Connie, whose Rayna Jaymes was in the twilight of her career, facing a dramatic turning point thanks to yours truly. Juliette wasn't necessarily Rayna's enemy, but she was the antagonist. I threatened Rayna's career, but I was never supposed to outshine her. That was the whole point."

Panettiere, who was only 22 when she landed the role as the troubled, talented, and fiercely stubborn Juliette, wryly notes that "women of a certain age in any entertainment sector can tell you that championing a twentysomething blond, bubblegum star over an older, more established veteran is a bad idea."

Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere on 'Nashville'Credit: Chris Hollo/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty

"Rayna Jaymes had earned her stripes, and Juliette hadn't. That was the way it was supposed to be," she adds. "Unfortunately, after the pilot, it was clear that my billing had gone way up. I went from maybe number five in terms of importance to nipping at Connie's heels. I was deeply uncomfortable with this development."

The actress had already spent two decades on screen when she began working the musical series. She'd joined the core cast of the soap operaOne Life to Liveat only four years old, and worked steadily through stints onGuiding Light,Heroes, and films likeIce PrincessandRemember the TitanswhenNashvillecreator Callie Khouri came calling.

"I was twenty-three years old, and Connie was in her forties with three Emmy nominations under her belt," Panettiere recalls in the memoir of filming Season 1. "She was also a new mom. This should have been her time to shine, and while it was in many respects, I was terrified of making Connie worry that I—not my character—was trying to compete with her."

She revealed that while filming the show's promo material, she used small opportunities to show Britton that there wasn't any desire to undermine her position on the show. "We were directed to saunter toward the mic stand and—at the same time—reach to grab it. This would insinuate our characters' rivalry," Panettiere explains. "I always made sure to grab the mic under Connie's hand, showing her I came in peace and with respect."

"I don't know if she noticed, but I did; I was not going to step on the toes of Rayna Jaymes or Connie Britton," she adds.

Panettiere's echoed a similar sentimentwhile chatting withEntertainment Weeklylast year, in honor of the show kicking off its second life on Netflix.

"I remember the first scene that I ever did with her. It was in [Nashville's Ryman Auditorium], the backstage of the Ryman, and Rayna comes in and says something nice to me, and I am just so passive-aggressive to her," Panettiere told EWat the time.

Panettiere remembered that after the bristling encounter—their first ever onandoff camera —she "kept apologizing to her, going, 'I am so sorry!' Because that was our first experience together, and I didn't want to step on toes. Sometimes it gets real, very real, you know?'"

Hayden Panettiere on 'Nashville'Credit: Katherine Bomboy-Thornton/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty

She explained that whileNashvillewas originally designed as a solo vehicle for the Rayna character, when producers saw the enthusiastic response to Panettiere as the brash, nakedly ambitious Juliette, the show was retconned around the character's contentious rivalry as star signees of the same label.

"It was difficult to play that sometimes, that competitiveness, where we were in opposition and against each other," Panettiere remembered. "And it's not what we thought it was going to be, so it was very difficult to step in." But she remembered Britton as "amazing" and "so supportive."

The actress added that "Connie is just a class act. She is so smart and so wise, and just being able to be on screen with her, I was honored. I think we kept each other grounded throughout the whole thing."

Panettiere has been opening up about her tumultuous journey from child star inThis Is Me,which takes the reader through the actress' childhood, including her parents’ rocky relationship andher venture into acting. (Panettiere and her motherare currently estranged.)

The book details her decision to sign over full custody of daughter Kaya to ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko in 2018 and her abusiverelationship with ex Brian Hickerson— but she says the hardest part of the process was writing abouther brother, Jansen, whodied in 2023at age 28. Jansen battled his own substance abuse issues, with Panettiere pleading for him to get help after he confessed that he tried crack and heroin.

Reflecting on her decision to share her story with fans in her memoirto EW earlier this month, Panettiere emphasized that the purpose of the book is to help others.

“I really hope that by reading about the trials and tribulations that I've gone through, that it can help [readers] overcome their own obstacles and make sure that they know that they're not alone, because that's the worst feeling in the world — especially when you're going through a trying time — is to feel alone,” Panettiere said. “All you want to know is that somebody else has gone through and survived what you're going through right now, and even though in the moment it feels like you'll never be okay again. But I also hope people laugh through it as well. I think there's a good balance.”

She concluded, “If I had told every single solitary story, the book would be five 300-page books.”
