Speaking with PEOPLE about her memoir andher relationship with Driver, Dunham said, "He was on these two tracks, and he's a very, very serious work-focused private person. So I have a lot of empathy for that."

"And again, the goal was never to make Adam seem like he was in any way the outlier of the show, but just to talk about how complex and confusing those first experiences of trying to be a boss were," she continued.

In reflecting on her “really rich creative dynamic" with Driver, Dunham recalled that they were able to “understand each other completely” when they were onscreen. (Driver starred inGirlsas Dunham's character's on-again, off-again boyfriend.)

But when it came to their real lives, things were different, Dunham said. "It was almost like we had two different relationships, one that kind of played out in our scenes together and one that played out in life,” she explained.

According to Dunham, her memoir was “an attempt to capture that [relationship] in an honest way, and also really talk about how much being around this very talented, charismatic, complex and powerful person affected me in ways that were really positive and in ways that were a bit harder.”

  • The actor discussed the last words of his wife, Nancy Dolman, during a Friday, May 15 interview with The New York Times

  • Short's new documentary, Marty, Life Is Short, is now streaming on Netflix

Martin Shortis getting candid about love and loss.

The actor, 76, reflected on the 2010 death of his wifeNancy Dolmanand the recent death of his daughterKatherinein an interview withThe New York Timespublished Friday, May 15.

During the discussion about his new Netflix documentaryMarty, Life Is Short,Short drew a parallel between the two moments in his life as he recalled his late wife's last words to him. Dolman, who was 58, died of ovarian cancer in 2010, while 42-year-old Katherine diedby suicidein February.

“Martin, let me go," Short recalled of Dolman's message.

“Katherine was saying: Dad, let me go,” he added. “I don’t see any difference between mental illness as a disease and cancer as a disease. In some cases, both are terminal. And in some cases, both are survivable.”

Short also told theTimesthat the most recent loss in his life was different. “This is your child,” he said. “I am trying to head toward the light.”

Short is also dad to Oliver, 40, and Henry, 36, whom he shared with his late wife of 30 years. The pair met in 1972 and later married in 1980.

TheOnly Murders in the Buildingstar shared a similar sentiment during a Sunday, May 10, appearance onCBS News Sunday Morning, calling the death of their daughter "a nightmare for the family."

"But the understanding that mental health and cancer, like my wife [had], are both diseases," he said. "Sometimes with diseases, they are terminal. My daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she could until she couldn't."

He added, "So Nan's last words to me were, 'Martin, let me go.' And what she was saying was, 'Dad, let me go.' So I hold a deep desire. And that's why I'm involved in this organization,Bring Change to Mind... taking mental health out of the shadows, not being ashamed of it, not hiding from the word 'suicide,' but accepting that this could be the last stage of an illness."

The Los Angeles coroner confirmed that Katherine died by suicide in February. At the time, the Short family said in a statement that she was "beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”

Katherine worked in private practice as a licensed clinical social worker and also part-time at the clinic Amae Health to provide community outreach, family support groups, peer support and psychotherapy. She mostly remained out of the public eye, but attended a few events with her father over the years.

Elsewhere during hisSunday Morningconversation, Short explained why it was important for him to speak out after his daughter's death. “If I said to the audience, any audience I was in, ‘How many have lost anyone from suicide?' you'd be stunned by the hands that would go [up]. ‘How many have mental health in their family?' You'd be stunned by the hands that would go up," he said.

“So why pretend that this is your own pain? Maybe by sharing your pain it will help other people's pain,” he added.

Caitríona Balfe Admits She Doesn't 'Fully Understand' What the “Outlander” Series Finale Ending Means

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the series finale ofOutlander, now streaming on Starz.

NEED TO KNOW

  • Outlander came to an end after eight seasons on Friday, May 15

  • Star Caitríona Balfe broke down the series finale episode and admitted that she doesn't "really know what happened" for Claire and Jamie in the end

  • "Are they alive in this time? Are they alive in a different time? I don't know," Balfe said

Outlanderhas officially come to an end, but evenCaitríona Balfeisn't totally sure how the story wrapped up.

In the final episode, which premiered Friday, May 15, on Starz, Jamie (Sam Heughan) faced the battle that Frank's history book said would see him die, but he survived and reunited with Claire (Balfe), who joyfully proclaimed that her husband's account was wrong.

The battle wasn't really over, though, as Jamie was shot and killed in a final act of defiance from the British. As the gunshot rang out, Claire felt it in her chest too and ran to Jamie, whom she found dead.

A montage of the decade-long love story the series explored between the couple then played — and a scene from the show's first episode finally confirmed that it was indeed Jamie's ghost looking at Claire in her window — but the final scene of the episode was a twist. Claire was laying next to Jamie's body, and before the screen went to black, both of their eyes opened and they both sucked in a breath.

Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts reminded fans that "there's magic inOutlander," but he would not confirm or deny what the final scene means. "I'm not going to tell any single fan how to interpret that last beat," he toldEntertainment Weekly.

Balfe, 46, was more candid about her interpretation of the episode. "It's so heartbreaking for Claire, obviously, when she feels [Jamie’s] dead. I'm not sure that I fully understand the ending," she toldEW. "I don't really know what happened."

"I thought it was really cool that they went and did the Jamie ghost thing again, and that in some way, maybe, he was calling her, or he pulled her into his orbit," she said. "But as to what happens when they're lying on the stone, I don't know."

Sam Heughan in 'Outlander'Credit: Starz

As for whether the final scene meant that Claire brought Jamie back from the dead, Balfe said, "I would have loved for it to have been a bit more mystical, and that Claire had more agency in bringing him back."

"I think in some way, yes, she does. But then it's like, are they alive in this time? Are they alive in a different time? I don't know," she said.

She revealed that she played the scene as if Claire had also died from the loss of Jamie. "I think that's what it is," she toldEW. "That's how I was sort of playing it. He is her home. It's veryRomeo and Juliet, almost, they die together on this altar or this stone. It’s what you hope happens inRomeo and Juliet. We get to change the Shakespearean ending."
