French authorities booked about 100 seats onboard for vulnerable people on a priority list, the minister responsible for French Nationals Abroad, Eleonore Caroit, said. The plane departed from Muscat, Oman and made a stop in Cairo, Egypt, before touching down at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, as travel across the region remains heavily disrupted by the widening conflict.

A second flight carrying French citizens, who were based in Israel and managed to cross the border with Egypt, should arrive in France later Wednesday, Caroit said.

"We are focusing on a priority group — families with children, people affected by illness, old people," she told TF1 broadcaster. "Our goal is to help repatriate as quickly as possible the French people who wish to return."

French President Emmanuel Macron said an estimated 400,000 French people are present in the region affected by the conflict, either as residents or temporarily passing through.

With airspace closed or heavily restricted across much of the Gulf, passengers have been stranded not only in the region but also in cities far from the fighting after their connecting flights were canceled. Amid the travel chaos and with commercial flights limited, governments across the globe have been mounting emergency operations to try to repatriate their citizens.

The United Statestold American citizensto leave more than a dozen countriesin the regionright away using any available commercial transportation. The countries include Iran and Israel, as well as Qatar, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, the Palestinian territories, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

In Europe, the British government said a chartered flight will take off from Oman late Wednesday to bring back some of the thousands of U.K. nationals in the Gulf. It said the most vulnerable will be prioritized for the first of what is expected to be a series of flights.

The Foreign Office said more than 130,000 British nationals in the Middle East have registered their presence with the government since the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict broke out, though not all are trying to leave. Many of those are in the UAE, and the government has advised against trying to travel overland to Oman.

Commercial airlines are also starting to resume some flights, with Etihad, Emirates and Virgin Atlantic all due to operate flights from the UAE to London on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Norway's Foreign Ministry said it's sending an "emergency team" to Dubai to reinforce the Norwegian embassy's team helping an estimated 1,500 Norwegians registered in the city.

Some netizens also believed his appearance might have been theresult of cosmetic surgery.

Botchedstar Dr. Terry Dubrow weighed in and said it was "too bad" that viewers weren't allowing a Hollywood star to age without speculation.

"It's too bad he's there to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award and all anybody wants to talk about is his face," the 67-year-old surgeon said.

TheBotchedstar called it a "bummer" that people were fixating on the iconic funnyman's appearance rather than the award

Calling the situation "kind of a bummer," the expert said people, including the biggest stars of Hollywood, should be "allowed" to age.

"Here's the truth. Jim Carrey has looked so young for so many years that as soon as he shows any sign of aging at all, people are surprised," he said.

Dubrow said he wasn't sure ifThe Maskstar had gone under the knife toalter his facial appearance. But he explained that the actor, if he did indeed undergo plastic surgery, might experience some swelling.

"I will bet you if some of that that you're seeing is swelling, and I have no idea [if it actually is], he'lllook very differentwhen that swelling comes down," he went on to say. "So give him a little time."

He noted that it could take even a year for the swelling to reduce for some patients.

Despite all the rampant rumors, the reality TV doctor said he believes it was "probably Jim Carrey" at the award show, adding: "I wouldn't want anybody to impersonate our national treasure."

"I still think he's Jim Carrey. He's a national treasure. He's still incredibly handsome and super talented and we all love him," he said. "So let's be a little kind about things."

The plastic surgeon said theBruce Almightystar still "looks great" and is "still [his] favorite comedian."

"Jim Carrey doesn't give an S, and I love him for that. We all should love him for that," he continued.

In the wake of the bizarre conspiracy theories, insiders said Carrey was reportedlyupset about the cruel clone rumors.

The insider said the iconic funnyman found it "frustrating" that people think he "isn't the real Jim Carrey," and he wasn't "taking the situation lightly."

"For Jim, this is something he should laugh about, but stupidity like this is a not a laughing matter," the source added.

Following the storm of rumors, a representative for theDumb and Dumberactor shared a statement on March 2 and confirmed, "Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award."

"All just to look younger," a netizen commented online, while another said, "Totally looks like Jim Carrey to me. People are idiots"

Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the French award show, also confirmed that it was Carrey himself who accepted the award in Paris.

"He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words" and spent a long time planning his visit to Paris, Caulier toldVariety.

He went on to say that the physical appearance ofThe Truman Showstar was a "non-issue" for him.

Epstein estate's $35 million settlement with accusers wins preliminary judge approval

By Luc Cohen

Reuters

NEW YORK, March 3 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge granted preliminary approval on Tuesday to an agreement for Jeffrey Epstein's estate to pay as much as $35 ‌million to resolve a class action lawsuit that accused two of the disgraced financier's ‌advisers of aiding and abetting his sex trafficking of young women and teenage girls.

Boies Schiller Flexner, a law firm representing Epstein victims, announced the settlement on February 19. On Tuesday, Manhattan-based U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian said the agreement appeared fair. The judge scheduled a hearing for September 16 to consider granting final approval.

The deal would bring an end to a 2024 lawsuit filed against Epstein's former personal lawyer ‌Darren Indyke and former accountant Richard Kahn, who are co-executors of Epstein's estate.

Epstein's estate previously set up a restitution fund that paid out $121 million to victims. The estate also paid $49 million in additional settlements to victims.

Daniel Weiner, a lawyer for Indyke and Kahn, said neither man admitted wrongdoing or conceded misconduct as part of the settlement.

"Because they did nothing wrong, the co-executors were prepared to fight the claims against them through to trial, but agreed to mediate and settle this lawsuit ‌in order to achieve finality as to any potential claims against the Epstein Estate," Weiner said in a statement.

Sigrid McCawley, a lawyer who brought the case, said in a statement, "We are pleased we could take another step forward on that long road for the survivors and provide some sort of justice."

Epstein died in a New York jail in August 2019. His death was ‌ruled a suicide.

Millions of documents released this year by the Justice Department from its investigation into Epstein have shed light on his social ties to wealthy and powerful people around the world.

In the 2024 lawsuit, lawyers at Boies ‌Schiller Flexner said Indyke and Kahn helped Epstein create a complex web of corporations and bank accounts that let him hide his abuses and pay victims and recruiters. Indyke and Kahn were "richly compensated" for their work, the lawsuit said.

The Boies law firm previously helped obtain $365 ‌million of settlements with JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank after accusing them of missing red flags about Epstein, once a lucrative client.

An Oscar race that looked like a runaway may be a close call, after all

NEW YORK (AP) — Who says to beware the Ides of March?

Associated Press

A March 15Academy Awardsmay feel late. By then, it will be almost a year since"Sinners"sunk its teeth into moviegoers last April. Some nominees have been on the campaign trail since theCannes Film Festivalin May.

But the upside of a prolongedOscarrace has meant some unexpected late drama. Think about the same movies long enough, and minds can change. For months, Paul Thomas Anderson's"One Battle After Another"sailed through awards season, picking up prize after prize. But the wins for "Sinners" and Michael B. Jordan atSunday's Actor Awards— along with some other recent developments — have given the Oscar race what Smoke or Stack might call fresh blood.

An Academy Awards that had looked like a runaway might be a close call, after all. With Oscar voting ending Thursday, let's survey the top categories

Best Picture

WHERE THINGS STAND

"One Battle After Another" has won at theGolden Globes, theBAFTAs, theProducers Guildand theDirectors Guild. But its nearly unblemished record was shaken up at Sunday's Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards), where "Sinners" took the top prize. You'd have to have quite a few rounds at the "Sinners" juke joint to convince yourself that anything else has much of a chance.

WHAT HAS THE EDGE

The tea leaves are strongest for Anderson's "One Battle After Another." The Producers Guild, which uses a preferential ballot like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences does, is among the most predictive of bellwethers. Their winners have matched the last five years and in eight of the last 10 years.

The actors guild best ensemble prize, on the other hand, has a shaky track record. In the last 31 years, the SAG winner has matched the Oscar champ only 15 times. The win for "Sinners," though, came right in the midst of Oscar voting. It was a good time to show out. So this race feels close to a coin flip, with a Warner Bros. movie on both sides. The awards season resume makes "One Battle After Another" the front-runner. But "Sinners," even witha record-setting 16 Oscar nominations, gets to play the underdog.

Best Actor

WHERE THINGS STAND

This has been one of the most competitive and hard-to-call races of the season. Look at Leonardo DiCaprio. He gives one of the best performances of his career, in the best picture favorite, and he's still a long shot. Instead,Timothée Chalametwas widely perceived as in the lead after early wins at the Globes and the Critics Choice Awards for his frenetic performance in "Marty Supreme." But the BAFTAs muddied the waters (Robert Aramayo, not in the Oscar mix, was the unexpected winner). And "Sinners" star Michael B. Jordan, much to his surprise, won at the Actor Awards.

WHO HAS THE EDGE

Chalamet's maybe meta campaign, full of swagger and braggadocio, rubbed some voters the wrong way. At the same time, many in the academy felt the 30-year-old should have won last year, for his Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown" — a year when he won with the actors guild but lost toAdrien Brody ("The Brutalist")at the Oscars. Chalamet will hope the reverse happens this year. But the academy is notoriously resistant to rewarding young stars. Jordan, 39, isn't much older. But it now suddenly feels like his moment.

Best Actress

WHERE THINGS STAND

Since the fall festival launch of "Hamnet,"Jessie Buckleyhas been the favorite. She's won at the Globes, the BAFTAs and the Actor Awards. Her closest competition is probably Rose Byrne, who won at the Globes in the comedy/musical category for "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You."

WHO HAS THE EDGE

This one's easy. Fortunes have fluctuated in most of the top categories, but Buckley has been entrenched as the front-runner for months.

Best Supporting Actor

WHERE THINGS STAND

Sean Penn, a two-time Oscar winner, has done nearly no campaigning, yet he finds himself the favorite after winning at the Actor Awards and the BAFTAs. But several other nominees remain in the mix.Stellan Skarsgård("Sentimental Value") won at the Globes and is the kind of widely-liked veteran actor the academy likes to reward. But so is Delroy Lindo ("Sinners"), who was a surprise Oscar nominee. In the eyes of many, Lindo has quickly joined the contenders.

WHO HAS THE EDGE

Penn's recent wins put him clearly in the lead, and he might stay there. But this remains a category rife with possibilities. The academy's strong international leanings should help Skarsgård. And it wasn't an accident that when "Sinners" won best ensemble at the Actor Awards, Lindo gave the acceptance speech.

Best Supporting Actress

WHERE THINGS STAND

This category has been all over the map. Teyana Taylor ("One Battle After Another") won at the Globes. Wunmi Mosaku ("Sinners") won at the BAFTAs. And Amy Madigan ("Weapons") won at both the Actor Awards and the Critics Choice Awards.

WHO HAS THE EDGE

Any of those three could win. Two of them — Taylor and Mosaku — have the benefit of co-starring in films the academy obviously loves. "Sinners" and "One Battle After Another" have 29 nominations between them, while "Weapons" has only the one. Yet the 75-year-old Madigan, another celebrated character actor who's been great for decades, has the momentum thanks to her charming Actors Award speech.
