Disney sends cease-and-desist to ByteDance over AI-generated videos

Feb 15 (Reuters) -Disneyhas sent a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance accusing the Chinese company of using Disney characters to ‌train and power its Seedance 2.0 AI video generator without permission, ‌a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Reuters

Disney said ByteDance had pre‑packaged Seedance with a pirated library of copyrighted characters from franchises including Star Wars and Marvel, portraying them as if they were public-domain clip art, the person said.

The letter alleges Seedance is reproducing, distributing and creating derivative works featuring Spider-Man, ‌Darth Vader, and other characters, the person added.

ByteDance will strengthen safeguards on its Seedance 2.0 AI video tool to prevent the unauthorised use of copyrighted characters and celebrity likenesses, the Chinese firm told the BBC on Sunday.

ByteDance did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

Online news outlet Axios was the first to report on Disney's move. Paramount Skydance has ‌also sent a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance, accusing the Chinese firm of engaging in "blatant infringement" of its intellectual property, Variety reported at the weekend.

Videos generated by Seedance 2.0, which was released last week, have gone viral in China including one of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in a ‌fight. The AI model has been compared to DeepSeek and has been praised for its ability to produce cinematic storylines with just a few prompts.

Disney has taken ‌similar actions against Character.AI, demanding that the startup immediately stop the unauthorised use of its copyrighted characters.

In December, Disney signed a licensing deal withOpenAI, letting the startup use characters from Star Wars, Pixar and ‌Marvel franchises in its Sora video generator.

Japan's economy barely grows in the last quarter as exports slow, with 2025 expansion just 1.1%.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's economy expanded at an anemic 0.2% annual pace in the last quarter, the government reported Monday, with growth for all of 2025 at just 1.1%.

Associated Press

Private consumption rose at a 0.4% annualized pace in October-December, but that was offset by a 1.1% drop in exports, the latest seasonally adjusted preliminary data show.

Japan's export-reliant economy has been shaken byPresident Donald Trump's tariffs, but has been growing at a lackluster pace for years. Prime MinisterSanae Takaichiis expected to roll out policies to help revive the economy after a landslide victory in a general election earlier this month.

Takaichi has promised to spend more and to suspend Japan's sales tax on food, among other measures.

Japan's GDPcontracted 0.7% in July-September, quarter-to-quarter, after growing 0.5% in April-June. Since the economy returned to growth in the latest quarter, the country narrowly avoided a technical recession, which is two straight quarters of contraction.

On a quarterly basis, the economy grew 0.1% in October to December, the Cabinet Office reported.

The 1.1% expansion last year was the fastest since 2022, when Japan was recovering from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government is projecting that the economy will expand at an average rate of about 0.6% in the near term.

Chicago teen who called for father's release from ICE detention dies of rare cancer

A Chicago teenager whose father was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last year as she was sick with a rare form of cancer has died.

Ofelia Torres died on Friday at the age of 16 from Stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that affects the soft tissue. She was diagnosed with cancer in December 2024.

Her father, Ruben Torres Maldonado, was arrested on Oct. 18, 2025, while she was home from the hospital spending time with her family. Ofelia posted avideoto Instagram following his arrest calling for his release and raising awareness about other families in similar positions.

Torres Maldonado was released from ICE detention about two weeks later on a $2,000 bond after a judge took his daughter's treatment into consideration during a hearing,NBC Chicagopreviously reported.

In the video, the teenager said her father was a hardworking immigrant who watched her brother while she stayed at the hospital for treatment.

"My dad, like many others, is a hardworking person who wakes up early in the morning and goes to work without complaining, thinking about his family," Ofelia says in the video. "I find it so unfair that hardworking immigrant families are being targeted just because they were not born here."

The video featured pictures of Torres Maldonado and his family, as well as of Ofelia at the hospital.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In aprevious statement regarding the arrest of Ruben Torres Maldonado, the Department of Homeland Security wrote: "He's been charged multiple times with driving without insurance, driving without a valid license, and speeding. During his arrest he did not comply with instructions from the officers and attempted to flee in his vehicle and backed into a government vehicle."

Shortly before Ofelia's death, a Chicago judge ruled that her father was entitled to a cancellation of removal because his deportation would impact his U.S. citizen children negatively, according to a representative for the family. This ruling is expected to provide a pathway for Torres Maldonado to obtain permanent residence in the U.S. and citizenship, per the spokesperson.

Ofelia, who was a junior at Chicago's Lake View High School, was present for the hearing via Zoom three days before her death, according to the spokesperson.

"Ofelia was heroic and brave in the face of ICE's detention and threatened deportation of her father," said Kalman Resnick, Torres Maldonado's lawyer. "We mourn Ofelia's passing, and we hope that she will serve as a model for us all for how to be courageous and to fight for what's right to our last breaths."

DNA pulled from glove found near Nancy Guthrie's home as FBI believe it may belong to suspect seen in doorbell cam

The FBI said a glove found two miles fromNancy Guthrie's Arizona homecould match the gloves worn by an "armed" person seen in surveillance footage outside her front door the morning shedisappeared, according to theAssociated Press.

This comes after the FBIreleased new photos and videosfrom Guthrie's doorbell camera of a suspect, who was wearing a ski mask and gloves, approaching her front door. Police said the man was armed and appeared to tamper with her camera.

The glove, which the agency said could match those worn by the suspect, has reportedly been sent off for DNA testing. While investigators have received the preliminary results, they're still waiting on official confirmation, theAPreports.

The agency reportedly said about 16 gloves have been found near Guthrie's home, most of which were later identified as gloves used by searchers that had been discarded.

Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of "Today" show anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills, a quiet community just outside of Tucson, Arizona, on January 31. She was reported missing the next day.

The masked individual seen at Nancy Guthrie's front door has been described as a man with an average build who is between 5'9" and 5'10" tall. He was wearing a black, 25-liter 'Ozark Trail Hiker Pack' backpack, the FBInoted.

On Thursday, the FBI also announced a new reward of $100,000 for information "leading to the location of Nancy Guthrie and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance."

This comes after law enforcement officialscarried out operations in the Tucson area Friday related to Guthrie's disappearance.

Investigators searched a residence about two miles from Guthrie's home Friday night, with a warrant that was "based on a lead," a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesperson said Saturday. No arrests were made.

Around the same time, officials conducted a separate traffic stop, also near Guthrie's home. Investigators questioned an individual, but no arrests were made, the sheriff's department spokesperson said.

The search for Guthrie is now entering its third week. Investigators "won't quit" their efforts to find Guthrie, even if it takes years, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos toldThe New York Times.

"Maybe it's an hour from now," Nanos said Friday. "Maybe it's weeks or months or years from now. But we won't quit. We're going to find Nancy. We're going to find this guy."

Her disappearance has sparked a massive search involving state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Guthrie relies on daily medication, and there could be "fatal" consequences if she doesn't take it, Nanos has said. When she vanished, police also flagged that she has high blood pressure, a pacemaker and cardiac issues, according to a 911 dispatch audio.

Savannah Guthrie has said she believes her mother is still alive. The "Today" show anchor recently shared an old video of her mother onInstagramwith the caption, "We will never give up on her."

She also shared the footage of the masked man and asked for anyone with information to come forward. "Someone out there recognizes this person. We believe she is still out there. Bring her home," she wrote onInstagram.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department said anyone with information should contact 1-800-CALL-FBI, 520-351-4900, 88-CRIME or visit tips.fbi.gov.
