AUSTRALIAN MODEL and influencer Sarah Ellen moved to Melbourne eight years ago when cast in Neighbours to play Kylie Minogue's daughter. Now, the 26-year-old, who lives in Sydney, is ready to return to acting, working on a short film and exploring more mature roles-binging on '90s film classics for screen inspiration.
I love actress Sharon Stone in Casino and Basic Instinct. They're iconic movies and the best era of film was definitely in the 90's, says Ellen who started sharing clips on YouTube back in 2011 at 13 years old, before finding fame on Vine in 2013. The rest is a modern-day social media career that continues to gather momentum. She most recently revealed her relationship with fellow social media star, Matt Ford, of The Inspired Unemployed via a collab Instagram Post featuring a rocket ship emoji as caption.
Everything about these movies is so beautiful and cinematic to me, and a lot of it was shot on film, said Ellen referencing Martin Scorsese who made Casino on Super 35 format.
There's a subtle nod to Sharon Stone's '90s energy in the way Ellen has curated her outfit for the Peroni launch of the Stile Capri beer at Bondi's Iceberg's just recently. She wore a slip silk white dress, her hair now pixie short, perhaps a trimmed throwback to Stone's slicked back mission of 1995.
Represented by IMG these days, Ellen has more than 781K followers a slew of Gen Z and Millennials who fawn over her social media posts waiting to see what she does or wears-next. Ellen is passionate about being true to her love of classicism, from the outfits she wears to the brands she aligns with, with her decision to pop up at Peroni's pop-up beach club only fitting with her love of Italy's finest.
Born in 1998, Ellen has a nostalgia for Y2K from her cinema picks to labels she loves, and her short hairstyle has become her signature now-perhaps, also inspired from the era that saw Demi Moore, Linda Evangelista and Natalie Imbruglia try pixie cut short for size.
My haircut has given me a fresh sense of confidence, said Ellen.
Whether that's translating into more work for myself, I'm not sure, but more importantly it's been a catalyst for growth in which the possibilities are endless, she said.
My HAIRCUT has given me a FRESH sense of CONFIDENCE
She'd love to work with British born and LA based filmmaker and photographer Nadia Lee Cohen-best known for her work with Miu Miu, Balenciaga and icons such as Sophia Loren and Pamela Anderson. But it's Cohen's surreal dreamy self-portraits that also pique Ellen's interest. She is truly the coolest on the planet right now, she said.
When she's not pool side with Peroni, Ellen can be found at David Lynch's underground bar in Paris called Silencio; and while she admits she's not a big drinker these days, the surrealist LA director and savvy decor of his iconic club, might be just the reason she orders a gimlet-a drink she fell in love with when dining at the namesake restaurant in Melbourne.
In Sydney, she works closely with friend and make-up artist Sean Brady; who she describes as my greatest teacher-the pair sitting together at Iceberg's, flicking through Instagram reels and shoots they've worked on together recently.
Ellen is also the face of a new Rollas campaign with a chance for her to become part of the design process too.
I've always loved denim and thought it was essential for any wardrobe-so to work on my own collection with the Rollas team was a pretty big pinch me moment, Ellen began. Being involved in the creation of the campaign direction was also really fulfilling as an artist too, it's a dream come true."
The model says she's getting better at accepting herself in the media spotlight; and is learning more about herself every day.
I've definitely had my moments of insecurity and doubt, just like anyone else, said Ellen. In an industry where you're constantly being evaluated based on your appearance, it's easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others and questioning whether you measure up."
She continued, But over time, I've come to realise that true confidence comes from embracing who you are, flaws and all. I've learnt that beauty isn't just about physical appearance, but also about character."
When it comes to style icons, she's loving Iris Law, Jude Law's daughter. I think she has a very unique and interesting take on her personal sense of style and I'm here for something a little different, she said. And of favourite designers, she's a big fan of Rabanne who she wore on the AACTAs red carpet a few weeks ago and also Australian label, Common Hours.
She's about to head to New York, her favourite city, and while her work life is all about appearances, she's turning inwards for deeper self-exploration as she enters her Saturn's return phase of her late 20s.
I listen to more podcasts over music these days, she said.
A great one I am enjoying right now is called The Psychology of Your 20s. A must listen to for any Gen Z and Millennial, she said. Ellen is also deep in sociology books and better understanding human behaviour and sexual relationships. I am also reading A Billion Wicked Thoughts by Ogi Ogas and Sai Gaddam it's about human psychology focusing on desire.
